Reviews

A romp. quotemarkMiller takes the reader on a romp through life in Jesus’ time. . . Every story is beautifully and effectively illustrated by drawings, maps, satellite images, photographs or pieces of artwork.

Although it is clear that Miller is writing as a Christian . . . he writes in a non-proselytizing, journalistic tone that makes it quite readable for non-Christians as well. He also doesn’t avoid issues that may make many Christians uncomfortable.

Whether you believe the Bible is the word of God or just a fascinating piece of ancient literature, this book will engage you.

—Wendy Woudstra, PublishingCentral.com

Engaging. quotemarkThe Jesus of the Bible is very accessible to the average person, yet still engaging for someone with a lot of biblical knowledge....[Miller] translates the Bible into English. Everyday English, that is. The kind that non-Christians speak."

—Annabelle Robertson, Crosswalk.com

Word pictures, too. quotemarkStephen doesn't just tell the story of Jesus . . . He paints a picture of Jesus' life in amazing detail . . . We even get, in chilling detail, a medical description of how death occurs by crucifixion. It's a unique way to look at stories we've heard many times before, stories which have rarely been presented in such detail.

—Steven D. Grisetti, Amazon

Humor. quotemarkJuicy tidbits such as: Antiochus IV boiled seven Jewish brothers and the fact that Herod the Great's Temple area was as large as 27 football fields. . . Best of all, Stephen Miller writes with humor.

TAKE A JOURNEY into the everyday life of Jesus and the world he knew.

Through vivid writing and compelling photography, you'll walk with him on the rolling hillsides, the baked-dirt Judean desert, and the rock streets of Jerusalem.

You'll experience the hard realities of life in a once-proud nation now occupied by foreign troops. You'll hear angry exchanges between Jewish leaders of clashing movements, jostling for position and power. You'll meet surprising saints—like a Roman soldier and a Samaritan "half-breed"—as well as sinners in the top ranks of religion, including high priests and Bible experts on the Jewish supreme court. And you'll learn about ancient Jewish customs, from birth to burial.

Be prepared for astonishing insights into the life and teachings of Jesus. You'll discover new and important meanings you never considered before.

UNDER THE SEA

Jellyfish cure

Remember the Bible story about the woman who spent all her money trying to find a cure for her excessive menstrual bleeding—a woman Jesus healed? The story’s in Mark 5.

A Roman science writer in that century backs up part of the story.

His name was Pliny. Writing in a collection of books called Natural History, he reported scores of treatments for that very problem—enough to wipe out a savings account.

Sample treatments:

  • Smash a jellyfish, apply topically.
  • Mix stomach contents of a deer with vinegar, apply topically.
  • Crush seeds from a hemlock pine tree (not poison hemlock), mix with water, drink.

No wonder the lady sought alternative medicine.
